I've taught hundreds of people how to play the guitar. I find that most people just want to be able to sit around with some friends and play simple songs. Most lessons started out the same way, with me crossing out all the bad information in the classic learn to play guitar books. While I was marking out most of their new book I would be saying "don't do this", "don't do it like that", "there is an easier way to do that" and "just ignore all that". I'd always tell people that someday I was going to write my own book, one that really made it easy for beginners.
