And The Green Grass Grew All Around

Words by William Jerome
Music by Harry Von Tilzer
Published 1912 now in the Public Domain
The folk process has changed the lyrics some. This is how I sing it.

Oh there once was a hole, a hole in the ground It was the prettiest hole that you ever did see

And the green grass grew all around all around The green grass grew all around

And in that hole, there was a tree
It was the prettiest tree that you ever did see Oh the tree in the hole and the hole in the ground

And the green grass grew all around all around The green grass grew all around.

And on that tree, there was a branch etc

On that branch, there was a nest...

In that nest there was an egg....

In that egg there was a bird....

And so on until....

Oh,the bird in the egg, and the egg in the nest, the nest on the branch, the branch on the tree, the tree in the hole, the hole in the ground

And the green grass grew all around all around, The green grass grew all around.
